Live Big in Small Space

4 Solutions To Live Big In Your Not-As-Big Home

Let’s face it the rather harsh reality: new HDB BTOs these days are just not as spacious as they were before – as much as we deny it, we know it’s true.

Nevertheless, just like those home showcases at IKEA, a small space should only make for more creative big ideas for your beloved abode.

So enough with the sizable puns: Here are 5 mind-blowing solutions to live big in a small home.

Choosing the most efficient home themes

The first step that we’d recommend towards having a spacious home is to decide on a theme that would allow it to happen in the first place.

In other words, you might want to avoid having a concept like the “halls of Versailles”.

The concept may seem grand, but having such bulky décor won’t do justice with the amount of real estate it takes up.

Instead, go for light and minimalistic concepts. Having minimalistic themes may be cliché, but the effects of having one is certainly visible.

The key, is sticking to a clean and functional design – where there is a space and purpose for everything you place around your home.

It doesn’t only have to be black and white either (fun fact: that’s called monochromatic). Feel free to add in any colour scheme you like, so long it’s nothing with too much contrast.

Open-concepts

You may have read our article about open-concept kitchens , but how far could we bring this idea forward?

As Miley Cyrus once screamed:

she came in like a wrecking ball… on that wall.

Okay, maybe she didn’t say “on the wall”, but that shouldn’t stop you from considering to smash a wall or two.

If you have spare bedrooms, consider breaking it down to expand even more space for your common areas such as your living or dining areas.

Do note however, that not all walls can be broken down. Consult your contractor first as, breaking a wall might weaken the structure of your entire apartment block!

Glass, Glass, Glass

On the flip side however, we understand that not all home owners may be interested in having too much openness.

For those who prefer to keep their home compartmentalised and/or those who just like to have distinct rooms, consider playing around with glass dividers and mirrors.

Whether it’s a display cabinet for all your school trophies, or an entire glass wall, these installations will help to create the illusion of unbounded space that conventional walls could never achieve.

Furthermore, the clever placement of mirrors can make create a multi-dimensional effect at areas that would otherwise appear cramped without them.

Don’t we all wish we could enter the mirror dimension anyway?

Lifestyle

Last but not least, not all solutions for a spacious home comes from physical boundaries. A change in home habits might play a significant role too.

However, this might be the most difficult thing to change.

For example, reminding yourself (and other home occupants) to keep areas of the house clutter-free would pay dividend in the long run.

Rule of thumb: if you have something kept around your house for more two years without using them – like that wooden spoon from that Bali trip 5 years ago –  it is a clear sign to dispose of these items as soon as possible.

Unless you’re looking to buy a resale flat from an older estate, the limitation in space will ironically play the biggest consideration point when you’re designing your home.

Hiring an experienced and trusted home designer might just make the process that much easier.

With years of experience of designing interior solutions and bespoke homes of all sizes in Singapore, Space N Living might just have the ideas you’re looking for.

5 Remedies For Your Home Renovation Headaches And Stresses

Going through with home renovations can be a stressful process: from picking the right colour for the living room, to convincing your fiancé that his man cave is taking too much of your mini-library space.

Having a sharp OCD sense won’t help either.

Of course everyone will notice that unsightly, 3.47mm panel gap in your bespoke parquet flooring.

But what if we told you that renovating need not be such a vain-popping process? Here are 5 easy-to-adopt remedies to not only ease those renovation stresses, but potentially make the whole process enjoyable too!

1. Setting your budget right

There’s probably a million and one things to decide when renovating a home – especially when it comes to choosing the perfect tiles, wallpaper, floors, bathroom fittings, cabinets, paints, appliances… and the list goes on.

Even a simple visit to something like a bathroom fitting showroom, will present you with literally hundreds if not thousands of selections to choose from.

A good way to streamline your choices is by setting a solid budget for each aspect of your renovation.

That way you and/or your interior designer, is able to pick out the best choices that fits your needs and wants.

Having a well-planned budget may also give you that extra insight when making those hard decisions: such as compromising on fancy faucets so you can afford that fancy new fridge all your friends talk about.

2. Making Collective Decisions

Whether you’re a young couple with your first home, or a family due for a home makeover, listening to the needs and consideration of every household member is important.

After all, a home is a shared space meant for all occupants to feel right at… home.

Although, everyone might not get what they want exactly, the results of the renovation will still be all worth it when you remember why you’re going through a home improvement/renovation in the first place.

3. Be Flexible

A renovation is a complex process especially when there are many stakeholders and contractors playing a role. Things might go slightly awry and cause unexpected delays along the way.

The key is to remain calm and flexible. Try to have alternatives or seek professional advice from your contractor if necessary.

Avoid making harsh decisions and you might very well be rewarded in the long run.

4. Planning Well

A renovations can be chaotic too.

With so many things going on at the same time, keeping track of progress may present a daunting challenge – especially if (and when) hiccups happen along the way.

Keeping an organised timeline of completion deadlines, deliveries and other important dates might just save you from renovation anxiety.

A timeline gives you rough estimates of what to do next. Ultimately, it could just help you to keep that end goal in sight – the highly-anticipated move-in date.

5. Choosing the right Interior Designers and Contractors

Sometimes, all you need for stress-free renovation experience is just to have a contractor that you can trust your home with… literally.

As much as price is a big factor when selecting your designer + contractor, other important considerations include the companies’ reliability, quality and ability to express your ideas into reality.

Like we said before, the difference between an average contractor and a good one might be that 3.47mm panel gap.

5 Space-Saving Techniques To Make Your Dream BTO, Dreamier

Congratulations! You’ve finally made that first big step to becoming a fully realised Singaporean adult: getting your very own BTO.

While getting the keys to your new home may be exciting, you might be wondering how to go about making the best of all the available space you’ve been working tirelessly for.

Well, we’ve got you covered.

To aid new home-owners in the conceptualisation of their ideal crib, we’ve compiled 5 of the best space-saving designs and techniques to help you get more space for your buck.

1. A “Walk-in” Wardrobe Partition

Get a list of what should be included in most people’s dream homes, and there’s a high chance you’d find walk-in wardrobes as one of the top items.

However, you might find it difficult to justify the space needed to actually install one.

But what if we told you, you can compromise less for more? Impress the Mrs with this “walk-in wardrobe” concept that doubles as a room partition.

This idea gives that uncanny illusion of a space “dedicated” to a walk-in wardrobe, while also appearing independent from the rest of the room.

2. Foldable/Pull-Out Storage Solutions

While the concept isn’t new, hidden storage is still one of the most effective ways to make use of redundant, unutilised space.

Such needless spaces are typically under beds, counters and around those awkward corners you may find especially in older HDBs.

Other than having more places to stash your weekend hauls, the benefits of having hidden storage are more than one.

For instance, the space freed up by such solutions reduces the need to have additional furniture around the house – possibly giving you more space for that mini-library you’ve always wanted.

3. Built In Console-Cabinets

The living room is the best place to entertain family and friends over those long weekends.

Quite often, it will also be the first impression to your humble abode. And if you’re the type to keep your home clutter free (or at least appear to be), you might consider having built-in cabinet-consoles for your living room.

Out of sight, out of mind.

4. Open Concept Kitchens

Good news! If you are receiving your BTO from Feb 2018 onwards, your BTO could come with an open concept kitchen as standard.

But why not take it a step further?

The picture above showcases a kitchen and dining that is seemingly sharing the same, expanded space.

By adopting this minimalistic idea, you can expect a dining area that is expansive (not expensive), functional and more importantly, Instagram-worthy.

5. Light It Up!

While most space-saving techniques involve physical changes, there are some “atmospheric” considerations that any modern household might want to consider too.

Lighting plays a big role in defining a space.

So, playing with the right lighting cues can make your home feel even more airy and spacious.

By carefully balancing the right ballet of natural and artificial light, home owners can significantly affect the desired atmosphere of their home.

As light creates a sense of depth, it is possible to make your home seem bigger through correct lighting planning.
